220th Commemoration of Igbo Landing: A Celebration of Resilience and Heroism Against Slavery

The Pentagram Pictures Media and Research Group, in collaboration with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, the Centre for Memories (CFM) Enugu, and the Centre for African Studies, Michigan State University (MSU), proudly presents the 220th Commemoration of Igbo Landing, a historic event that stands as a symbol of resilience and courage against slavery.

The event, scheduled to hold from May 23 to May 24, 2023, at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, will feature a robust international symposium, a stage play titled "Ikenga: The Dramatic Recreation of the Igbo Landing Story," and an exhibition that captures the events of 1803 in various dimensions.

The symposium seeks to initiate global conversations on forced migration, slavery, and illegal migration. The stage play will tell the story of the heroic deed of our forebears, while the exhibition will preserve, promote and document this historical monument of our history.

The commemoration is aimed at exploring the Igbo worldview, spirituality, art, technology, science, and other concepts that will educate and inform the world on the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people. The event seeks to promote peace, culture, and unity among Africans and the diaspora.

The sustainable project is anchored on the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), SDG 4: target 4.7 (Quality Education), SDG 16, Target 16b (Peace, Justice, and Strong institutions), and SDG 17, target 17.6 (Partnership for the goals).

The two-day event will kick off on May 23 with a courtesy visit to HOD's and Director's offices. The exhibition will be set up, and a candlelight procession will take place from Arts Theatre to Pavilion of Theatre and Film Studies for an evening of chants, poetry, and cocktails from 6 pm - 8.30 pm.
