Scholarship: 60 UNN indigent undergraduates gets financial assistance from philanthropist

Soccour has come the way of 60 indigents undergraduate from Delta State in University of Nigeria, Nsukka  as they received N50,000  cash financial assistance each from a philanthropist.

Presenting the scholarship certificate and the sum of N50,000 cash to the beneficiaries in Nsukka, Prof. Ike Onyishi, Dean, Faculty of Social Science, UNN urged the beneficiaries to ensure that the money was used on what it was meant for.

Onyishi said the objective of  Chief Jude Ozah, the "Isagba of Ogbashi-Uku kingdom in Delta State for instituting the financial assistance was help to help indigent undergraduates of Delta State origin to fund their education.

The dean explained that, Ozah had in April 2021 while chairing a public lecture of the faculty Instituted a N10m scholarship grant for indigent undergraduates of Delta State in UNN to assist them in their education.

He thanked the donor for investing in the education of the beneficiary noting that the financial assistance will go a long way in assisting them to meet up with their academics responsibilities.

"Ensure that you use the money for the purpose it was meant for, so as to encourage the donor to invest more on education.

"The beneficiaries should not only make judicious use of the money but should also study hard to ensure that they make good grades on graduation to justify the financial relief they received," he said.

Onyishi commended the donor(Ozah) for the love he had for education and future of youths in Delta State.

"I applaud Ozah for the love he has for education as well as future of youths.

"I also commend the Desbursement Committee for their diligence and  dedication in selecting those who are actual in need of thel assistance.

"Many undergraduates from Delta applied but the disbursement committee after screening selected 60 indigents among them.

"if you are  indigent student of Delta State origin in UNN, if you didn't benefit this year you may benefit next year," he said.

According to the dean, the first disbursement of the financial help started in 2021,  could not take place in  2022 as a result of ASUU nationwide strike which lasted for eight months.

Responding on behalf of other beneficiaries Ekwenuya Adanne, from Department of Sociology, an indigen of Ogbwashi Ukwu community in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State said the beneficiaries would forever remain grateful to Ozah.

"Our prayer is that God should replenish the pocket of our benefactor in million folds for having the interest of poor people at heart.

"We also, say thank you to the faculty of Social Science for attracting this scholarship for indigent students of Delta State in UNN,"she said.
