The Nigeria Institute of Soil Science (NISS), on Wednesday, trained farmers, extension agents, and community advisors in the Enugu North Senatorial District on Climate-Smart Agricultural (CSA) practices and soil fertility management to promote food security.

The training workshop with the theme "Enhanced Research Aids on Climate-Smart Agricultural Practices to Promote Food Security," was facilitated by NISS's South East Zonal office domiciled at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

Participants who were selected from across the six local government areas that made up the Nsukka zone (Enugu North Senatorial District) were conducted around experimental/research farms in the university for a practical display of the positive impact of the CSA on crops.

Prof. Charles Asadu, the South East NISS Zonal Coordinator said that CSA is an approach for transforming and reorienting the agricultural system to support food security under the new realities of climate change.

He said that the primary purpose of the CSA training is to engage farmers, extension workers, and other stakeholders on the impact of climate change on soil and agriculture and educate them on best soil management under the climate change protocols.

He noted that the CSA training will help farmers, extension agents, and community advisors to enhance their farm productivity and increase income while maintaining healthy soil.
"Every farmer and extension agent should be acquainted with climate-smart agriculture to mitigate the widespread changes in rainfall and temperature patterns threatening agricultural production.

"As a farmer, you must be smart, and very observant in monitoring the changes in the weather for the survival of your crops.

"You should apply sustainable soil management to ascertain the strength and fertility of the soil, as well as make good decisions on which crop to plant at a particular farmland and period in accordance with weather conditions," he said.

In a separate interview with some of the participants, Mrs. Oluchukwu Ugwuoke, a farmer from Nsukka LGA commended NISS and said that the training workshop was very educative.

"I commend NISS for this wonderful workshop, we are now well educated on climate-smart agricultural practices, and we are optimistic that the knowledge gained in today's workshop will enhance our farm yield at a profit," she said.
Also, Mr. Bartholomew Ugwu, an extension agent from the Enugu State Agricultural Development Programme, commended NISS for the workshop and noted that it afforded them the opportunity to introduce new farming products to the farmers.

The participants were also trained in; the Introduction to Climate Change Agriculture Module, Why Climate-Smart Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, and Landscape Management, and Effects of Flood on Soil and Environment, among others.
A certificate of participation was presented to the participants by Prof. Asadu
