Notable Igbos in diaspora to grace UNN new yam festival, organised by CIS

Prof Uchenna Agbedo, Director, Centre for Igbo Studies (CIS), University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) says one of the highlights of this year's CIS international conference will be, traditional Igbo new yam festival.
Agbedo disclosed this in Nsukka on Thursday to newsmen while speaking on activities lined-up to mark the international conference of the centre.
He said the conference would provide a platform for scholars, researchers, experts, and cultural enthusiasts to explore and discuss the current state and future of the centre and Ndigbo.
"This conference that will hold from August 15 to 18 at UNN will have Ndigbo within and in diaspora as participants and special guests.
"Major highlights will be holding of Igbo new yam festival, traditional wrestling.
Traditional masquerade display, fashion parade, oratorical performances, arts and crafts among others.
"The Igbo rich cultural heritage will be in full display as who is who in igboland will be present,"he said.
According to him the centre would continue to promote and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Igbo people.
The director explained that, the centre had always strived to create a vibrant platform for intellectual discourse, cultural exchange, and community engagement.
"Through this conference, the institute seeks to facilitate meaningful dialogue and collaboration among Igbo stakeholders in the country and in diaspora.
" This dialogue will foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Igbo language, culture, tradition and history,"he said.
According to the don, the opening ceremony of the conference would be declared open by Prof Charles Igwe, the Chief Host and Vice Chancellor of UNN on August 17 at the Princess Alexandria Auditorium (PAA).
He also said that, the conference would be chaired by Dr Nwachukwu Anakwenze, a.k.a Onowu Abagana, a Los Angeles-based medical practitioner and CEO, Victorian Care Medical Group Inc. California, USA.
"Anakwenze is a renowned cultural enthusiast and promoter of Igbo language, culture and tradition
"Numerous achievements of Anakwenze in healthcare as well as his leadership roles in Igbo communities at home and diaspora makes him an ideal choice to preside over this Igbo conference,'he said.
The director listed renowned scholars that would present papers during the conference to include; Ticha Njoku (Emeritus Professor, Western Kentucky University, Virginia, USA, Chief Emma Obiesie, Dean, School of Business, Okan International University & Davie Florida USA/Turkey.
Prof Peter Akah, professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology, UNN and Prof Gabriella Nwaozuzu former Director, Centre for Igbo Studies, UNN, among others.
According to the director, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, would be among dignitaries that would be present during the conference.
Meanwhile, the director has announced that, Dr Chidoo Nwangwu, an award winning Community Newspaper Publisher in United States would also be given excellent award during the conference.
"It's in recognition of Nwangwu's outstanding performance in media industry as well as his quality selfless service to humanity," Agbedo said.
