Education funding should not be left for govt alone -Tetfund Secretary

Mr Sonny Echono,  the Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund  (Tetfund) has said that to ensure sustainable funding of education, tertiary institutions and stakeholders must be involved in education financing and not left government alone in funding.

Echono who is an architect by profession, said this in Nsukka on Friday while delivering University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) 51 convocation lecture titled " University Autonomy and the Challenges of Sustainable Funding in Nigeria,".

He said that, incessant industrial actions over the few years by  universities  staff  bordered on challenges in funding and heightened the need for collective funding in tertiary institutions in the country.

"This calls for stakeholders' involvement in education financing to secure a qualitative and functional tertiary education system  as essential tool to sustainable education.

"Our universities should be encouraged and supported to seek for alternative and additional revenue sources,"he said.

The Tetfund boss urged universities to go into core business of education delivery, research and services such as consultancy , clinical medical services, agribusiness, technology parks and innovation hub that would be self financing and generate revenue.

He commended the administration of President Bola Tinubu for always making education one of the priorities of his administration.

Prof Charles Igwe, The Vice-Chancellor of UNN, earlier in a remark while conferring  Bachelor's degree and Diploma of the University on deserving graduands of the 2020/2021 class.

Igwe announced that, a total of 11,494 Bachelor's degree  were awarded . 288 graduands earned the First Class (Honours) degrees.

According to him, 4,853 with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degrees of the University, while 5,077 graduands will be conferred with the Second Class (Lower division) among others.

The VC, advised the graduands to remain true ambassadors of the University and reminded them that their graduation from the institution should  not imply the end if their relationship with UNN, their alma mater

Also in a remark, the Chancellor of UNN, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife congratulated the graduates and their families for the great achievement of earning tbe degree of Nigeria's number one university.

The Chancellor expressed appreciation with the large number degrees being awarded at the 51 convocation.

"This is a confirmation that UNN is a growing institution, where both staff and students work hard.

"I am happy the UNN has remained a good breeding ground for good quality and dependable workforce which we need to develop our country and the world in general," he said

The Registrar of UNN, Dr Ngozi Nnebedum announced Vivian Urama of the Department of Soil Science as the best graduated student of the class with 4.99 grade.
