A university professor says, wet spell (rain for serveral days) is responsible for increase in cold weather in Nsukka town and its envions.
Prof Chidi Nzeadibe, Head of Department Geography, University of Nigeria Nsukka said this in Nsukka on Monday in an interview with our correspondent while reacting to constant rainfall and cold weather in Nsukka and environs for some time now.
He said that, wet spell as result of climate change phenomenon was caused by increased human activities on earth surface.
The don said that, the atmospheric weather condition in 1980s and now were not the same, because of increased in human activities that had depleted the ozone layer.
"Indiscriminate cutting down of trees, bush clearing, bush burning, dumping of wast, building on water channels have exposed the earth surface to more danger.
"Using of fossil fuels and other human activities have increased emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, all these contributed to climate change.
"Until people stop these activities that exposed the earth surface to danger and increased the emission of carbon dioxide the adverse effect of climate change will continue to be there," he said.
Nzeadibe said that he was not surprised on increase in rainfall in the area as Nigeria Metrological Agency (NIMET) had ealier in the year predicted that, there would be increase in rainfall in some parts of the country.
"My advice to Nigerians is for them to always pay attention to NIMET weather forecast so that they will be well guided and take proactive measures,"he said.
The Professor of Environmental Management and Sustainability urged residents of Nsukka and other parts of the country.
Where the present prevailing cold weather exist, to always wear clothing that would protect their body from contracting cold both in daytime and at night.
"Effects of climate change are here with us, so we should cultivate habits that will protect our environment as well as our health," Nzeadibe said.
I have always been against cutting down of trees especially when there are no replacements.
